【頭書】
子ほど倹約にならないものはない。一人いても物入りは莫大に違うものである。まして大勢いては大変な出費である。されども、まさか捨てられもしないものであって、大変無駄なものである。後を譲る子は一人あれば済むことなので、子が何十人あろうとも、その中から随分欲の皮の突っ張った太っちょを殺してでも、死にそうにもない丈夫な嫌な奴を予め見立てておいて、これに家督を譲るべきである。しかし総領を始め兄弟の恨みがないように、図のごとく並べ置いて誤魔化すのである。家督をやる子一人が残った時、後に残った息子は奉公人として売り、女は遊女として売るべきである。されども、これさえ世話が甲斐ないので、とかく女房を持たないに如くはない。家督は武士ならば武芸を嗜み、君の御役に立ちそうな者を見立てて養子にすべきである。町人は手代の中から真正な者を選ぶべきである。

このように並べ置き、読み始めより十人目毎を段々除け候えば、予め家督を譲ろうと思う子丁度が残り申候。恨み言がないために、このように数えて籤で当たった同然に思わせようと、他の大勢の子を騙すゆえに騙し子立てと言う。

There is nothing as uneconomical as children. Even with just one, the expenses differ enormously. Moreover, with many children, the costs are tremendous. However, since they cannot simply be abandoned, they are greatly wasteful things. Since one child is sufficient to inherit the family legacy, even if there are dozens of children, one should select beforehand—even if it means killing off some particularly greedy fat ones—a sturdy, disagreeable fellow who seems unlikely to die, and pass the inheritance to him. However, to avoid resentment from the eldest son and other brothers, one should arrange them as shown in the diagram and deceive them. When only the one child to receive the inheritance remains, the remaining sons should be sold as servants and the daughters sold as prostitutes. However, since even this brings no reward for the trouble, it is best not to take a wife at all. For inheritance, if one is a samurai, one should select someone who practices martial arts and seems likely to serve one's lord well, and adopt him as heir. For merchants, one should choose an honest person from among the shop clerks.

On the matter of deceptive child selection and its diagram
By arranging them like this and gradually eliminating every tenth person from the beginning of the count, the child one intends to give the inheritance to will remain. To prevent resentful complaints, by counting this way and making it seem as if it were decided by lottery, one deceives the other numerous children, hence it is called "deceptive child selection."
