上戸（しやうこ）
わらひ上戸は世（よ）に希（まれ）
なるものにて予（よ）
数年（すねん）酒中（しゆちう）の仙人（せんにん）と
なりて諸方（しよはう）に遊宴（ゆうゑん）す
れどもいまだ然（しか）るべき笑（わ）らひ
上戸（しやうこ）を見（み）ず人（ひと）々酒（さけ）を呑（のん）で笑（わらひ）
談（たん）ずる是 常（つね）のことにて酒の癖（へき）
といふべからず実（じつ）のわらひ上戸は
おかしくもあらぬことを腹（はら）を
よらして笑（わら）ひ入（いり）ほとんど
わらひ中風（ちうふう）といふ病（やまひ）の如（こと）く
自（みづから）留所（とまるところ）なきをいふなりたま〳〵
わらひ上戸ともいふべきさけ
呑（のみ）と同席（どうせき）にて呑しに熊（くま）の皮（かわ）
のふとんを手（て）にて撫（なて）まわしけし

現代語訳
笑い上戸
笑い上戸は世に珍しいものである。私は数年間、酒の仙人となって各地で宴会に参加してきたが、いまだに真の笑い上戸を見たことがない。人々が酒を飲んで笑い談じるのは普通のことで、これは酒の癖とは言えない。本当の笑い上戸は、おかしくもないことに腹をよじらせて笑い入り、ほとんど「笑い中風」という病気のようで、自分では止まるところを知らないことを言うのである。
たまたま笑い上戸とも言うべき酒飲みと同席して飲んだ時、その人が熊の皮の布団を手で撫で回して、けしからんほど笑う。傍らの人は早く察して「奥様もよろしくお過ごしでしょうか」と言う。これは古い話ではないかと言うと、その人は頭を振って「いや、そうではない。拙者の息子の七蔵のがっそうな頭によく似ているのがおかしい」と言って、腹を抱えて笑った。
このようなおかしくもないことを笑う人もありがたい。

The Laughing Drinker
The laughing drinker is a rare thing in this world. I have spent several years as a sage of wine, attending banquets in various places, but I have yet to see a true laughing drinker. When people drink and engage in cheerful conversation, that is ordinary behavior and cannot be called a drinking habit. A real laughing drinker is someone who doubles over with laughter at things that aren't even funny, almost like suffering from a disease called "laughing palsy," unable to control themselves.
I once drank with someone who could be called a laughing drinker. He kept stroking a bearskin futon with his hand and laughed outrageously. A person nearby, quickly catching on, said, "I trust your wife is doing well too" - thinking it was that old story. When I suggested this, the man shook his head and said, "No, that's not it. It just looks so much like my son Shichizo's big round head that it's hilarious," and he doubled over with laughter.
Such people who laugh at things that aren't even funny are indeed precious and rare.
