垂眠（ねむり）上戸（じやうご）
春（はる）の日のどやかなるに
弁当（べんとう）小竹筒（さゝゑ）とりもたせ
野辺（のべ）の若草（わかくさ）ふみしだき
ひばりの高（たか）く啼渡（なきわた）るに
毛氈（もうせん）打（うち）しき呑（のみ）かけた
るは下戸（けこ）の人（ひと）さえうら
やみぬべし扨（さて）は夏（なつ）の夕（ゆふ）
つかた川舟（かわふね）に棹（さほ）さし
流水（ながるゝみつ）にさかづきを浮（うか）め
花火（はなひ）の空（そら）にひらめき
たるいわんかたなし秋（あき）は北山（きたやま）の
茸狩（たけかり）萩（はき）紅葉（もみぢ）なんどに呑暮（のみくら）し
冬（ふゆ）のいと寒（さむ）き頃（ころ）は炉（ろ）の元（もと）に
まどゐして心（こゝろ）ある友（とも）どち打寄（うちより）
酒（さけ）をあたゝめ出（いだ）したるぞまた
よのたのしひを究（きわむ）といふ
べしその外（ほか）青桜（せいらう）【楼ヵ】戯場（げきじやう）
雪月花（せつけつくは）祝儀（しうぎ）不 祝義（しうぎ）或（あるひ）は
喧嘩（けんくは）の中直（なかなを）り何事（なにごと）も唯（たゝ）
酒（さけ）のみてこそおもしろ
けれ扨（さて）すこし酔心地（よひこゝち）に
なり互（たがい）に打解（うちとけ）常（つね）いわぬ

おかしき最中（さいちう）にいびきの

垂眠上戸
春の日ののどかな時に、弁当や小さな竹筒を持参して、野辺の若草を踏みしだき、ひばりが高く鳴き渡る中で、毛氈を敷いて酒を飲み始めたのは、下戸の人でさえ羨ましく思うであろう。さて夏の夕方には、川舟に棹をさして、流れる水に盃を浮かべ、花火が空にひらめく様子は言いようがない。秋は北山でのきのこ狩り、萩や紅葉などを見ながら飲み暮らし、冬のとても寒い頃は炉端に集まって、心ある友達が寄り合い、酒を温めて出すのも、また世の楽しみを極めるというべきである。
その他、遊郭や芝居小屋、雪月花の風景、祝儀や不祝儀、あるいは喧嘩の仲裁など、何事もただ酒を飲んでこそ面白いのである。さて少し酔い心地になり、お互いに打ち解けて、普段は言わないこと聞かないことを話し、面白くおかしい最中に、いびきの声をとても高く響かせて、倒れて寝る上戸がいる。これは害はないといっても、酒の興趣は非常に薄い。
上戸仲間はこれを称して「正体もないご有様」と呼ぶ。
英語訳
The Sleepy Drinker
On peaceful spring days, carrying lunch boxes and small bamboo flasks, treading on young grass in the fields while skylarks sing high overhead, spreading a felt mat and beginning to drink - even teetotalers would envy such scenes. Then in summer evenings, poling a river boat, floating sake cups on the flowing water while fireworks bloom in the sky - such beauty is beyond description. In autumn, mushroom hunting in the northern mountains while drinking among the bush clover and autumn leaves, and in the bitter cold of winter, gathering around the hearth where kindred spirits come together to warm and serve sake - these too represent the ultimate earthly pleasures.
Besides these, whether at pleasure quarters or theaters, enjoying snow, moon and flowers, at celebrations or funerals, or mediating quarrels - everything becomes interesting only when accompanied by drinking. Then, becoming somewhat intoxicated and relaxed with each other, sharing things usually left unsaid and unheard, in the midst of such amusing and delightful moments, there are drinkers who collapse and sleep, snoring very loudly. While this causes no harm, it greatly diminishes the pleasure of drinking.
Fellow drinkers call this "a state of complete senselessness."
