酒気（さかけ）のなひ生（す）めの

現代語訳
多言上戸
酒気のない素面の時は、人も心を奥の間に閉ざして、渋柿を吸ったような顔つきをしているが、さあ五、六杯飲み始めると、何となく口が軽くなり、次第に酒が進むほど、聞かれもしないのに身の上話や人の陰口、世間の雑談を続け、つんぼに聞かせるような大声で話す。さりとて、酒気のある時と普段の薄暗い様子は、天と地、雲と泥ほどの違いがあり、下駄と焼味噌ほどの大違いだと、山の神の女房の方から酒の燗をつけて持ってくることになる。
このような多言の上戸にも必ず苦手な話があって、あるいは学問の話になると、何となく元気がなくなってきて、それからはさっぱり物も言わず、そこで手枕をして寝てしまう者もいる。その他、茶の湯の話、書画の噂、何にしろ自分の知らない道の少し高尚な事の話になると、さしもの多言も急に黙り込むのがお決まりである。

The Talkative Drinker
When sober without any alcohol in their system, people keep their hearts locked away in inner chambers, wearing faces as if they've sucked on bitter persimmons. But once they've had five or six cups, their tongues somehow loosen, and as the sake continues to flow, they launch into unsolicited personal stories, gossip about others, and worldly chatter, speaking in voices so loud they could make the deaf hear. Indeed, the difference between their state when drinking and their usual gloomy demeanor is as vast as heaven and earth, clouds and mud - as different as wooden clogs and grilled miso paste. At such times, even the mountain god's wife would bring over warmed sake.
Even such talkative drinkers inevitably have subjects they struggle with. When the conversation turns to scholarly matters, they somehow lose their vigor and from that point say absolutely nothing, with some even resting their head on their hand and falling asleep. Similarly, when talk turns to tea ceremony, discussions of calligraphy and painting, or any somewhat refined matters in fields unfamiliar to them, even the most talkative will predictably fall completely silent.
