勤（つと）めさけといふ上戸（じやうご）は常（つね）におのれより

勤め上戸
勤め酒という上戸は、常に自分より地位の高い人と交わり、酒席に連なるものである。興に乗れば大酒を飲むこともあるが、悪口や失礼、不行儀などの下品な振る舞いはない。もともと飲食の欲を離れて飲む酒なので、美味しい料理であっても、むやみに食べ過ぎることはない。酒を飲む心がよくても、無理に酒を貪ることはなく、気を張り詰めて飲むので、ついには姿を乱し、酔いつぶれるということがない。席の雰囲気や興に乗じて、あるいは舞い、また踊り、浄瑠り、物真似、小歌、三味線など、それぞれが修得した隠し芸があって、

実に一座の興を添える。しかも幇間が座を持つのとは異なり、始終礼儀正しくて、いかなる大酒飲みに出会っても、上手にあしらう手段は、なかなか一朝一夕の修行ではできないものである。これが「勤め酒」の名前の由来であるが、作り上げようとしてもなかなか難しい。いつとなく癖となって、自分と同輩や友達と飲み合わせても、この心得を離れることがない。これは一種の妙なる上戸というべきである。

The Diligent Drinker
The "diligent drinker" type is one who regularly associates with people of higher social standing and joins their drinking parties. When the mood strikes, they may drink heavily, but they never engage in vulgar behavior such as speaking ill of others, being rude, or acting improperly. Since they drink not from physical appetite but for other purposes, even when faced with delicious food, they do not eat excessively. Even though their drinking spirit is good, they do not greedily pursue alcohol, and because they drink while maintaining their composure, they never become disheveled or collapse from drunkenness. Depending on the atmosphere and excitement of the gathering, they have hidden talents they have mastered - perhaps dancing, performing joruri puppet theater, mimicry, singing kouta songs, or playing the shamisen.

They truly add to the enjoyment of the gathering. However, unlike professional entertainers (houkan) who hold court, they maintain proper etiquette throughout, and no matter what kind of heavy drinker they encounter, their skillful methods of handling the situation cannot be acquired through just a day or two of practice. This is why they are called "diligent drinkers," but such a character cannot be easily manufactured or constructed. It becomes a natural habit, and even when drinking with peers and friends of equal standing, they never abandon this mindset. This should be called a type of extraordinary drinker.
