乍恐以書付奉歎願候
一去ル午年炭焼之者共夫喰御願として罷出候もの
先年ニ引続金三拾両ツゝ 御上納可仕段願書奉差
上帰村之上炭焼之者共申談尓候処以ノ外之義極々尽山
ニ相成誠ニ難渋之年柄故金拾両 御上納仕候茂無覚
束候ニ付役人ヲ以庚午年九月廿一日奉歎願甚侭ニ而
願書御戻しニも不相成間 御聞済と相心得置候段者恐
縮至極ニ奉存候得共実以尽山ニ相成候義故三役人

恐れながら書付をもって嘆願申し上げます
一、去る午年に炭焼きの者どもが生活費の願いとして参上した者たちは、
先年に引き続き金三十両ずつ上納いたすべき旨の願書を差し上げ、
帰村の上で炭焼きの者どもと相談いたしましたところ、予想以上に困難で、極めて山林資源が枯渇してしまい、
誠に困窮の年柄ゆえ、金十両を上納することも覚束ない状況につき、
役人を通じて庚午年九月二十一日に嘆願申し上げましたが、勝手ながら
願書の返却もなく、ご承認いただけたものと心得ておりましたが、恐縮至極に存じますものの、
実際に山林が枯渇してしまった事情により、三役人

Item: Those charcoal burners who came forward in the previous Uma year (1870) requesting assistance for their livelihood,
submitted a petition stating they would continue to pay thirty ryō each as in previous years,
but upon returning to the village and consulting with the charcoal burners, the situation proved more difficult than expected, with the mountain forests extremely depleted.
Due to this truly difficult year, even paying ten ryō would be uncertain,
so through village officials we submitted a petition on the 21st day of the 9th month of Kōgo year (1870), and though presumptuous,
since the petition was not returned to us, we understood it to have been approved. While we feel extremely ashamed about this,
