口は災いの門戸と言われるけれども、口がなくては良いことも悪いことも分からないものです。日々皆が口稼ぎばかりをして、よく口を使うものです。親より口を孝行し、子より口を可愛がり、夏になるとまず口には「土用が入った」と言って、瓜やスイカ
【左丁 本文】
道明寺（羹）などを持ってくる。口がやかましいと見ると、かえって多く持ってくるものです。
人の悪いことを見ると、すぐに話したがり、浮き名が立つのを嫌って口封じをしようと、金で口止めなどをすれば決して言わないと言うが、ひょっと話してしまっては悪いので、人の口には戸は立てられないと言うが、ここぞ立ててやろうと隙間戸を作って引き立て、顎の掛け金を引っかけておく。

Every day everyone makes their living by talking, frequently using their mouths. They show filial piety through their mouths more than to parents, and show affection through their mouths more than to children. When summer comes, first they say to the mouth "the hottest period has begun" and bring watermelons and melons,

Dōmyōji sweets, and such. When they see the mouth being demanding, they bring even more.
When people see bad things about others, they immediately want to talk about it. To avoid getting a bad reputation, they try to seal mouths with money bribes, saying they absolutely won't tell, but since they might accidentally let it slip, and since "you can't put a door on a person's mouth," here they try to install a sliding door, pulling it up and hooking the jaw latch.
