五色眼鏡を本屋へ売ってやったところ、錦絵や草双紙などが残らず五色に見えるので、錦絵の彫摺りということは必要なくなった。ただ墨一色の板で、他の色摺りのように見えるので、彫って通常の絵だと思い、買って行く草双紙も同じく五色に見えるので、草双紙の五色摺りとは珍しいと、ことのほか流行している。

流行り買いに来る人に残らず、かの五色眼鏡をかけさせて本や絵を見せるので、本物だと心得、皆買って行く。こうすれば、先は紅や藍の代わりに板代がよほど節約でき、その上手間代も省けるので、なかなか眼鏡の十や二十回分では利益にならないので、江戸中の本屋が皆買い込んだのがおかしい。

眼鏡をかけて見せるのを、やはり普通の眼鏡だと知って見るのも変てこりんである。

When the five-color spectacles were sold to bookstores, woodblock prints and illustrated storybooks all appeared in five colors, so the carving and printing of multi-colored prints became unnecessary. With just black ink on a single printing block, they appear as if they were multi-colored prints. People think they're buying regular illustrated books and take them home. The storybooks also appear in five colors, so customers think "five-color printed storybooks are rare!" and they become extremely popular.

All the customers who come to buy the latest trends are made to wear those five-color spectacles to view the books and pictures, so they believe they're genuine and all buy them. By doing this, instead of using red and indigo inks, the printing costs are greatly reduced, and labor costs are also saved. The profit from ten or twenty pairs of spectacles is quite substantial, so it's amusing that all the bookstores in Edo bought them up.
