ほじりに草庵（そうあん）を訪（とむら）ふ事（こと）屡々（しば〳〵）なり一日（あるひ）
来（きた）りて彼是（かれこれ）するうち不図（ふと）此冊子（このさつし）を見付（みつけ）
出（いだ）し二三 枚（まい）読（よむ）や否（いな）膝（ひざ）を拍（たゝき）胆（きも）【膽】を消（け）し
奇（き）々 妙（みやう）々 此（この）こと〳〵斯（かふ）もいへはいはるゝものか
一言（いちごん）もなし〳〵貸（かし）て下（くた）され写（うつし）したい
直（すぐ）に写（うつ）して手間（てま）はとらぬといふ故（ゆへ）爰（こゝ）そ
黙（だまつ）て居（い）る所（ところ）てなと写（うつす）には隙（ひま）はかゝぬ

といふべきを手間（てま）はとらぬとは
何（なに）職人（しよくにん）の手間（てま）取（とり）にやといはれつい
口（くち）がすべつたと答（こと）ふ扨（さて）は貴所（きしよ）の口中（こうちう）に
ぬかり道（みち）ありやと押（おし）かへされ弘法（かうほう）にも
筆（ふで）の謬（あやま）りでござると少々（せう〳〵）ふくれた
様子（やうす）なり書物（かきもの）なれは筆（ふで）のあやまり
ならん云（いひ）損（そこな）ひは口（くち）の謬（あやま）りなりいかに〳〵

ほじり回しながら草庵を訪れることがしばしばあった。ある日やって来て、あれこれしているうちに、ふとこの冊子を見つけ出し、二、三枚読むか読まないかのうちに、膝を叩いて肝を消し、「奇々妙々、このような事柄も、こう言えば言えるものなのか。一言も申し上げることがない。貸してください、写したいのです。すぐに写しますので手間は取りません」と言うので、ここぞとばかりに黙っているところで、「などと写すのに暇はかからない

と言うべきところを、手間は取らないとは何事か。職人の手間取りにでもなったつもりか」と言われ、つい口が滑ったと答える。「さてはあなたの口中にぬかり道があるのか」と押し返され、「弘法にも筆の誤りでございます」と少々ふくれた様子である。「書物なれば筆の誤りであろう。言い損ないは口の誤りである。いかにも」

He would frequently visit my humble dwelling while poking around for faults. One day he came and was doing this and that when he suddenly discovered this booklet. After reading only two or three pages, he slapped his knee and was astounded, saying, "How strange and wonderful! Can such things really be expressed this way? I have nothing to say in criticism. Please lend it to me - I want to copy it. I'll copy it right away and won't take up your time." So I remained silent, thinking this was my chance, when he said, "And so copying takes no time..."

When he should have said "copying takes no time," instead saying "won't take up your time" - what's this about? Are you some kind of craftsman charging for labor?" When told that his tongue had simply slipped, he retorted, "So there are slippery paths in your mouth, are there?" When answered with "Even Kōbō makes mistakes with his brush," he looked somewhat annoyed. "If it's writing, then it would be a mistake of the brush. A slip of the tongue is a mistake of the mouth. Indeed, indeed."
