熟読（じくどく）した所（ところ）が全篇（ぜんへん）凡（すべ）て水乕（かつぱ）の
屁（へ）何（なん）の御茶湯（おちやとう）にもならずといへども
御臍（おへそ）が沸（わかす）茶（ちや）子（こ）にも充（あて）たまはゞ
作者（さくしや）の幸甚（こうじん）しからんと云（いふ）

分野を分けて、追々嘘をつき慣れれば、
嘘八百にも達するだろう。そうしたところ、
近所の書林（出版業者）某が、これもまた同じく
嘘つきで、弥次郎と藪の中で
屁をひり合う仲で、交わりも浅からず、
我が嘘を版木に彫って、自分の嘘の

元手にしようとする。春の日、秋の夜長の
頃、心を静めて香を焚き、味わい深く
熟読したところが、全編すべて河童の
屁で、何の茶の湯にもならないけれども、
お臍が茶を沸かす道具の足しにでもなれば、
作者の幸いこの上ないだろうと言う。

calming the heart and burning incense, savoring and
reading carefully, the entire work is nothing but kappa
farts, of no use for the tea ceremony,
but if even one's navel could serve as kindling for boiling tea,
it would be the author's greatest fortune, he says.
