【Right Page】 Along with nine sailors, we sailed eastward for about ten days, but the wind conditions were unfavorable, so we moored in the shadow of an island that appeared about one and a half ri away. We waited for favorable winds at this place for about three days, then departed and sailed for seven to eight days. The wind conditions were still poor, so we anchored in a local inlet for about ten days waiting for the tide. We departed from there and sailed northeast for about two days through the islands before arriving at the mainland. Only the captain-like person went ashore, while I remained on the ship for another ten days. Then the aforementioned captain-like person returned to the ship, and it appeared he was indicating that I should come ashore. So I boarded a small boat with that captain and the sailor-like men, and we reached the shore in early June. 【Left Page】 At that place, such a person took a piece of black cotton cloth about seven shaku long and wrapped it around my head, then had me remove my clothing. 《Marginal note: I was wearing a straight-sleeved garment and leg coverings that I had received in America》They dressed me in the clothing of a Chinese sailor-like person and had me board a palanquin-like conveyance they had brought from somewhere. 《Marginal note: This palanquin-like thing was enclosed with boards on top with blinds hanging down, covered entirely with black cotton so that the outside could not be seen》I traveled about ten chō at a rapid pace with the Chinese sailor-like person, passing through areas where towns continued and both sides had stones piled up. They lowered the palanquin at that place and brought me out, removed the cloth from my head, had me change back into my original clothing, and entered through a gate. 《Marginal note: The shape of this gate was generally the same as in Japan》Inside there was a house with a tiled roof. 《Marginal note: The house construction was the same as before》I was made to rest on a platform-like object placed in an earthen-floored room of two rooms square, with guards...
