We mutually discussed the circumstances of our respective drifting voyages, and I was greatly relieved to hear from those people that they would send us back to Japan from this place. Those people returned to their original location, and a Chinese interpreter told me that I was to go to an official office-like place. I was placed in a palanquin 《marginal note: The construction of this palanquin was the same as before》, and accompanied by the interpreter and official-like persons, we traveled about seven to eight chō along the town streets. There, to the south, stood two red-painted pillars about four ken long, with a temporary gate-like structure a little inside, a long barracks-like gathering place on the right side, and what appeared to be a government office building facing forward. It was tile-roofed with a frontage of about five ken, with painted screen-like objects placed there, and bench-like objects set out. The interpreter and I sat there for a while, when

the official-like person from earlier called us in from the inner area. Like the interpreter, we passed through a narrow corridor-like area and entered an inner room of about ten tatami mats, where there was a person who appeared to be an important official. He had placed two curved stools, with a desk-like object about four shaku square in front, covered with felt cloth and with brush holders and such placed on it. His clothing appeared to be patterned silk, and he wore a hat with blue jewels and red cords hanging from it. About ten subordinate official-like persons stood lined up on both sides. The interpreter greeted them and explained that they were investigating the circumstances of the castaway and his place of origin. After I finished stating the details of my drifting and my birthplace, I returned to the first house, where they provided me with food 《marginal note: The food at this place consisted of rice, vegetables cooked in soy sauce, fish, daikon radish, tofu, and such》. Furthermore, about three or four neighboring houses
