一、この場所に到着したところ、折よく中国の広東への渡航船があり、四、五日のうちに出帆する様子だったので、前述のコマンダンテの支配地に残っている五人の者たちに申し送りし、一緒に乗船したいと色々と頼みましたが、距離もあり、その船は待ってくれないため、やむを得ず私と初太郎の二人だけでその船に乗り込んで広東へ向かうことになりました。残っている五人の者たちには右の事情を書き記して送り、さらにコマンダンテ

一、この所から中国の広東へ乗り渡る船は北アメリカ辺りの船とのことで、乗り組んでいる船頭や水夫、並びに私が滞在していたカリフォルニア辺りとは言葉が通じませんでした。その水夫の中でカリフォルニア辺りの言葉を知っている者が一人いて、船中でその者を通訳にして船頭などに話を通してもらいました。なお、北アメリカ並びにイギリス人は言葉が同様とのこと、北アメリカは寒い国だとその者に聞きました。
