イギリス人は色が白く、髪は赤く、頭の形並びに着物は大体アメリカ人と同様です。

一、この所でイギリスの蒸気船を見ました。船の形は外国船と同様ですが、その蒸気船は全て鉄でできており、他の船よりも少し長く、船の中程から上には手製の鉄作りの水車のような物が左右にあります。その車輪によって帆に頼らず自由に進み、車輪は火によって回る仕掛けになっています。その船が出帆するのを見たところ、船中にも外の車輪に対応して左右に木の車輪が二つあり、縁回りは梯子のように組んであります。出船前になって左右の内側の車輪の桟

に登って踏むと、その車輪が回るのに応じて自然に船外の鉄の車輪も回り出します。左右の内側車輪の中程で石炭（割書：ヲゴヘイダ、石の類）を焚き、その上に二間程の煙出しの筒があり、その筒から煙が盛んに出る頃、内側の車輪を踏むのを止めると、鉄の車輪がよく回って、回るのに応じて進み出します。

一、その車輪によって海中の往来などが自由にできます。もちろん舵は使っています。その他にも外国船が数多くこの所に入港するのを見ました。もちろん船の装備並びに人物などは外国船全て同様に見受けられました。

First, I saw an English steamship at this place. The shape of the ship was similar to other foreign ships, but this steamship was made entirely of iron and was slightly longer than other ships. From about the middle of the ship upward, there were handmade iron devices like waterwheels on both left and right sides. With these wheels, the ship could move freely without relying on sails, and the wheels operated by a mechanism powered by fire. When I observed this ship departing, I saw that inside the ship there were also two wooden wheels on the left and right corresponding to the external wheels, with the edges constructed like ladders. In the middle area between the left and right internal wheels, they burned coal (marginal note: called "Ogoheida," a type of stone), and above this there was a smoke stack about two ken in length. When smoke began pouring out vigorously from this stack, they stopped treading the internal wheels, and the iron wheels rotated well, propelling the ship forward as they turned.

First, with these wheels, they could travel freely across the ocean. Of course, they still used a rudder. Besides this, I saw many other foreign ships entering port at this place. Naturally, the ship equipment and the people all appeared similar among all foreign ships.
