ましたが、積み込んでいた酒や砂糖、囲い水などで命をつないでおりましたところ、同十二月中頃、さらに水が不足して困窮いたしましたので、神々へ立願いたしましたところ、不思議なことに翌日夜、少々波が静まって大雨が降りましたので、いろいろと手配して雨水を溜めて渇きを凌ぎ、なおも洋上に漂流している間に、鰹や鰤などを釣り取り、また船べりに付いた牡蠣を取って食料にして過ごしておりました。翌年寅年二月十四、五日頃、居眠りをしている間に異国船がやって来て、その船に乗り込んで色々と手真似などをしたという夢を見ましたところ、同二十日頃、およそ一里半ほど西の方沖合いに外国の船を見つけました。その船がこちらへやって来て、端船二艘を

下ろし、外国人と見える者が一艘に六人ずつ乗り組み、この船に鉄砲を三挺ずつ用意してありました。私どもが乗っている船を二、三度回り、その人数のうち二、三人が私どもの船へ乗り込んで、船の損傷箇所などを見分しているような様子でした。積み込んである酒や砂糖の樽の鏡板を打ち抜いて指を入れて確かめ、また綿俵を見つけ出し、さらに綿を少々引き出して見分した上で、本船へ乗り帰りました。程なく端船でやって来て、私どもを助けてくれるような様子を手真似で示しましたので、乗組員一同、着物類並びに所持品を持って、その端船に乗り、外国船へ乗り込むことになりました。

However, we sustained our lives with the sake, sugar, and stored water that had been loaded on the ship. Around the middle of the 12th month, we again faced severe water shortages and made vows to the gods. Mysteriously, the next night the waves calmed somewhat and heavy rain fell, so we made various arrangements to collect rainwater and survived our thirst. While continuing to drift on the ocean, we caught bonito and yellowtail fish, and also harvested oysters that had attached to the sides of the ship for food. Around the 14th or 15th day of the 2nd month of the following Year of the Tiger, while dozing, I dreamed that a foreign ship came and we boarded it, communicating through various hand gestures. Around the 20th of the same month, we spotted a foreign ship about one and a half ri to the west in the offing. That ship came toward us and lowered two boats.

What appeared to be foreigners, six men to each boat, boarded these boats, each equipped with three guns. They circled our ship two or three times, and two or three of their number boarded our ship and appeared to inspect the damaged parts of the vessel. They broke through the head boards of the sake and sugar barrels that were loaded aboard, inserted their fingers to examine them, found cotton bales, pulled out some cotton to examine it, then returned to their main ship. Soon they came back in the boats and used hand gestures to indicate they would rescue us. Therefore, all crew members took their clothing and possessions, boarded their boats, and went aboard the foreign ship.
