一、その外国船は和蘭陀船と同様の造りで、長さ十六間程、幅四間程、黒塗りで帆柱が二本あり、帆は白麻で大小十五、六枚ありました。船の中程に一貫目筒くらいの大砲二挺が仕掛けてあり、積み荷の中には砂糖やこさ（胡椒）などが見受けられました。

一、その船の人数は二十七、八人が乗り組んでおりました。人相は顔が白く目がうるんでおり、髪を垂らして後ろの方は五分程ずつに挟んで回し、紗または藤で作った【被り物の図あり】図のような物をかぶり、着物は毛綿や別珍のような毛綿の筒袖、股引を着て、皮の靴を履いておりました。

その丑年十月十三日から洋中に漂流し、翌寅年二月二十日頃外国船に乗り移るまでの日数はおよそ百三十日程になりました。

その洋上並びに唐国まで赴いた間の日数の計算については、一ヶ月は大の月、一ヶ月は小の月として計算して覚えております。里数については海陸ともに一里三十六町の心積もりです。アメリカの陸里数は日本より少々長いと承っております。

一、その外国船に乗り移ったところ、私どもの船に残っていた物は、およそ酒百樽、砂糖十八樽、塩五十俵、操綿百俵、線香五十箱程でした。そのうち外国人どもが端船で、酒四十樽、砂糖十八樽、この二品を外国船へ

1. That foreign ship was built in the same manner as Dutch ships, approximately sixteen ken long and four ken wide, painted black with two masts. It had fifteen or sixteen sails of various sizes made of white hemp. In the middle of the ship were mounted two large cannons about the size of one-kanme tubes, and among the cargo we observed sugar and cosa (pepper).

1. The ship's crew numbered twenty-seven or twenty-eight men. Their appearance was white-faced with watery eyes, hair hanging down and tied back in sections of about five bu each, wearing headgear made of gauze or wisteria [with illustration of headgear] as shown in the figure. Their clothing consisted of woolen garments and velvet-like woolen tube sleeves and hakama-style trousers, and they wore leather shoes.

From the 13th day of the 10th month of the Year of the Ox when we began drifting on the ocean until around the 20th day of the 2nd month of the following Year of the Tiger when we transferred to the foreign ship, approximately 130 days had passed.

Regarding the calculation of days during our time on the ocean and journey to foreign countries, I kept count assuming one month had thirty-one days (large month) and the next had thirty days (small month). For distances, both on sea and land, I calculated one ri as thirty-six chō. I have heard that American land distances are somewhat longer than Japanese ones.

1. When we transferred to that foreign ship, what remained on our ship was approximately one hundred barrels of sake, eighteen barrels of sugar, fifty bales of salt, one hundred bales of raw cotton, and about fifty boxes of incense. Of these, the foreigners used their boats to transfer forty barrels of sake and eighteen barrels of sugar—these two items to the foreign ship.
