現代語訳
ここに不思議なことがある。この所に限って男女交合の道は一向に不格好なはずなのだが、この頃はそろそろと洒落てきて「何の、木竹の実ではあるまいし」などと我を忘れて味な木になり、相生の木、連理の枝などとそろそろ色事の道が始まったのは、この作者も一向に思案の外で合点がいかない。それゆえ娘の木を持った家の門口へは、世間の息子の木が体中にいろいろと絵を描いたものを、その親たちが鉢植えのまま娘の木の家の前へ直しておくことがある。その模様の気に入ったものを娘の木の婿木にする。これを錦木を立てるとも、染木とも言う。木息子ももうこんなに色取るようになっては大騒ぎだ。

Here is something strange. In this place alone, the way of male-female union should be completely ungainly, but lately they have gradually become sophisticated, saying things like "What of it, we're not just fruits of trees and bamboo!" and forgetting themselves, becoming flavorful trees with "paired trees" and "intertwined branches" - this gradual beginning of the way of love affairs is completely beyond this author's expectations and understanding. Therefore, at the gates of houses with daughter-trees, the sons-trees of society have various pictures painted all over their bodies, and their parents place these potted plants in front of the daughter-tree's house. They choose whichever design pleases them as a bridegroom-tree for the daughter-tree. This is called "setting up brocade trees" or "dye trees." Now that tree-sons have come to be so colorfully decorated, it's quite a commotion.
