現代語訳
移ろうものは世の中の人の心の花と詠んだ小町の歌は、この島のことを詠んだのであろうか。
英字見立だんだんと洒落に身が入ってきて、ここも流れの島の内と、いつしか廓ができて女郎の木を商うようになり、駒下駄からの思いつきで、黒塗りの石台を二つにして両方の足を植えて、その石台へゼンマイ仕掛けのように仕組んでおき、「今日は中の町のどこそこへ行こう」と思うと、ちょうどそこの門口で止まるようにゼンマイを仕掛ける。さりとはよくしたものである。これより島中一等にこの通りになり、我が手に石台のゼンマイを仕掛けながら歩くゆえ、どこまでも行かれる重宝なことである。

With Western-style commentary gradually becoming more sophisticated and stylish, this place too has become part of the pleasure quarter islands, and eventually a red-light district was established where courtesans made of wood are traded. From the inspiration of wooden clogs, they split black-lacquered stone pedestals in two and planted both feet on them, then rigged the stone pedestals with spring mechanisms. When thinking "Today I'll go to such-and-such place in the middle district," they set the spring mechanism to stop exactly at that gate. What a clever invention this is! From this point on, this became the standard throughout the island, and since they walk with spring mechanisms in their stone pedestals controlled by hand, it's quite convenient as they can go anywhere.
