現代語訳
息子の木も育て方が悪いとわがままにはびこり、曲がりくねって素直な木にはならないゆえ、こんな木は親の手にも余り、ついに捨てられて「宿なし腰木」という木になり、冬などは寒気をしのがんと、薦や俵をかぶって暮らすのである。後には木も腐ってくると、体の内へ臭いができて、つるなどが引きつり、筋張り、骨絡みという煩いがあり、曲がった息子の木はみなこのとおりである。寒気を受けて、らちもない物になる。
♪親はなくても子は育つというが、野中に落ちこぼれた子種が自然と成人したるを案山子というこの手合いは、畑の番などをして世を渡る。鳥が落とした種より生えたものゆえ、一名「鳥落とし」ともいう。
案山子が言うには、
♪弓矢は家に伝えても、羽根なき鳥も射ぬだろう。
♪あまりそそろしく、関所対面もできず、割れた擂鉢などを拾って、四肢がためになって上がっている。
♪顎で鼻を押しているようになった。もはやとても木の衰えか知らぬ。
英語訳
When son trees are raised poorly, they grow wild and willfully, becoming crooked and refusing to grow straight. Such trees become too much for even their parents to handle and are eventually abandoned, becoming what are called "homeless hip trees." In winter, to ward off the cold, they live covered with straw mats and rice bags. Later, when the wood begins to rot, foul odors develop within the body, vines become tangled, and there are ailments called "muscle tension" and "bone entanglement." All crooked son trees end up this way - exposed to the cold air and becoming good-for-nothing.
♪Though they say children grow even without parents, those child seeds that fall and are left behind in the fields and naturally mature into adults are called scarecrows. These types make their living doing things like guarding fields. Since they sprouted from seeds dropped by birds, they are also called "bird-droppers."
The scarecrow says:
♪Even if bow and arrow are passed down in the family, I cannot shoot even wingless birds.
♪Being too restless, unable even to face checkpoint inspections, picking up broken mortars and such, with limbs stiffened and raised up.
♪It's as if I'm pushing my nose with my chin. Perhaps this is simply the decline of the tree, who knows.
