The three men received instruction in the magical arts as easily as poling a boat downstream. They could make hand towels appear as horses, throw dust into the air and transform it into birds, make flowers bloom on dead trees, turn clods of earth into precious jewels, sit in empty space, hide in the ground, suddenly produce black clouds, and cause rain and snow to fall - there was no technique they could not master.
Besides these three men, those who had completely recovered from illness at the Nanban temple were given gold and silver to become merchants, or allowed to wear swords and become government officials, and were sent throughout Kyoto and neighboring provinces to spread word of the Nanban temple's vast benevolence. They proclaimed that "patients with incurable diseases from all provinces should come to the Nanban temple to receive benefits," claiming this was Nobunaga's command. Those who had recovered at the Nanban temple dispersed to neighboring and distant provinces, spreading this message out of gratitude and to repay the temple's virtue. Therefore, people flocked to the Nanban temple like clouds and mist.
The Padres and Irmão, along with those three men and other disciples living at the temple, examined each of these crowds one by one, giving them medicine and clothing. For the parents, wives, and children left behind who were struggling to make a living, they provided assistance while the patients underwent treatment at the Nanban temple. As a result, the number of Nanban temple followers increased tremendously day by day.
According to one account, while patients were convalescing at the Nanban temple, each member of their household, even infants, was given one bu of gold daily. When people heard of this, even healthy individuals would come claiming to have this or that illness to receive the monetary assistance. Even so, the Nanban temple never reproached them, and gave gold and silver universally to anyone who became a follower.
However, from the followers
