-ritayū. He was originally a craftsman called Nakai Hanbei. He served as Hideyoshi's consultation partner for construction projects in Osaka and various other places, working day and night without leaving his side. His residence was in the castle town of Yodo where he kept his mother. Having become the head carpenter of the realm, he commanded authority among his fellow craftsmen. At this point, the padres and irmãos of the Nanban temple thought: "During Nobunaga's reign, he was the great patron of our sect's founding and we could propagate freely as we wished. But now Lord Hideyoshi holds power over the realm and can move the entire country with a single word. Somehow we must become intimately familiar with Hideyoshi and serve him well, so that our sect can propagate without hindrance." They devised various clever strategies. Since they heard that this Shūritayū followed Hideyoshi day and night without leaving his side, they schemed: "We must somehow convert Shūritayū to our sect, and through him gain access to Lord Hideyoshi." So one time, Baian deliberately spent the day traveling from Yamazaki to the Makikata ferry crossing, arrived at Yodo, and had his palanquin stopped at the gate of Shūritayū's residence while he was away. Through a messenger he had this message conveyed: "This is a monk from the main temple in Kyoto. I went to Sakai in Izumi Province on business and have returned this far. These are dangerous times with bandits and thieves about. Travel at night is uncertain. Though it is sudden, might I humbly request the kindness of one night's lodging?" When Shūritayū's mother heard this, she replied: "Though the master is away and this is an empty residence, since you are a monk, I shall provide you lodging," and
