Searching in and around the capital, they found a layman called Hakuō Koji who lived at Yanagi-no-baba on Shijō Street. In the past, he had been a monk residing at the Nan'in of Mount Hiei, but due to an illness affecting his head, he could not shave his head, so he bound his hair and became a hermit. Having found him, they invited him to Yodo and sent word to Baian accordingly. Baian came immediately. The time was the twelfth day of the ninth month of Tenshō 12 (1584). Baian's appearance when he took his seat was striking: over crimson crepe silk, he wore a mouse-colored robe of North Korean weave and a flower-colored woolen hood. Hakuō Koji entered the same room and met with Baian. Baian's attendant placed a black-lacquered box decorated with raised gold and silver designs and metal fittings to the right of his seat. At that time, Hakuō asked: "What is the name of the Buddha that serves as the principal object of worship in the Tentai sect?" Baian opened the lid of the box, took out the three Pure Land sutras as well as the eight volumes of the Lotus Sutra, placed them on the lid, straightened his kneeling posture, and answered: "What our sect reveres as its principal object of worship is the divine spirit who appeared at the beginning of the creation of heaven and earth, whom we honor and worship as Tentai Nyorai (Heavenly Emperor Tathagata). This encompasses the entire realm of the world - there is no Buddha outside of this Buddha. Already, Tentai Nyorai appeared in this world at the beginning of chaos, and through this Buddha's wisdom made the sun, moon, and stars shine clearly in heaven, and created everything on earth from mountains, seas, and plants to humans, birds, and beasts. In that era, human hearts were upright and in accordance with the Buddha's intent, gaining heavenly rewards without seeking them, but in the latter age, human desires arose freely and attachment
