teaching phrase. Does Baian use Shakyamuni's sutras?" So saying, he repeatedly struck Baian's head with his fan. Baian gave not a single word in reply, only muttered under his breath, shook off Hakuō's hand, slowly rose from his seat and fled home. The entire assembly burst into laughter in unison. The mother was greatly pleased and offered thanks to the lay practitioner Hakuō. Hakuō said: "If he argues with sutras, I intended to answer with sutras, but since Baian preaches apart from the sutras, today's doctrinal debate was an extremely easy debate with no need to exercise one's mind. Probably this is the extent of the new sect's doctrinal arguments. If so, they merely try to make people submit to their sect by giving them gold, silver, and treasures. This is indeed a suspicious sect." So saying, he bowed to the old mother and departed. Meanwhile, Nakai Shuridayū obtained leave from Lord Hideyoshi, returned to his lodgings, met with his mother, and listened in detail to the whole story of the Nanban temple's Baian. Since he listened as if he had some particular purpose in mind, he went to Lord Hideyoshi and reported the entire matter in detail. Hideyoshi inquired about the wit displayed throughout, and being an excellent general of quick intelligence and instant wisdom, he immediately understood and said: "Nobunaga was a great patron of the founding and propagation of their religion, but he met an unexpected death. Now that I have gained control over the realm, even though they propagate their teachings, fearing my intentions, they desire to become intimate and approach me, seeking that you become close to me
