grounds, Sakai, and Shichidō Beach—at these three locations, fifty straw bags each were piled up. Those who wished to apostatize would roll out still in their bags and make their petition. They would be asked about their desired sect, the priest of that temple would be called, and a written pledge to become a parishioner of that temple would be submitted to the magistrate. This was the beginning of the temple registration system. The term "korobu" (to fall/apostatize) for those who convert also likely began around this time. At that time, this sect arose in a place called Suminuki in Shikichi District of Tōtōmi Province. These were disciples from when Kokushu Mō had stayed in this province for a while. The magistrate's office suppressed this. In Osaka, of the three who would not apostatize, one was the ornament craftsman Shichibei who was crucified upside down, the farmer Hachiemon received the same punishment, and the greengrocer Sōkichi died from water torture. In Kyoto, of the four who would not convert, two received crucifixion and two were burned at the stake. In Izumi Province's Sakai, of the three who would not convert, two were crucified and one was torn apart by oxen. At this time, this sect was completely exterminated without remainder. Twelve years after Kan'ei 3, in Kan'ei 14 (1637), a Christian uprising broke out in Amakusa and Shimabara in Hizen Province, and they fortified themselves in Hara Castle. An envoy came down from the Kantō region, and various houses of Kyushu besieged them. On the 28th day of the 2nd month of the following 15th year of Kan'ei, the castle fell. The general Shirō was killed by Kanno Sazaemon of the Hosokawa house, and over twenty thousand men and women perished at Hara Castle. From then on, the Christian sect was permanently exterminated and never arose again. From this year, Kan'ei 15, to Nanban, Inuhaniya, Amakaha, and Luzon...
