歯は馬の歯のように雪よりも白く、爪は熊の手足に似ていた。髪は鼠色で、その年齢は五十歳ほどに見えた。名前はウルガン・バテレンといい、南蛮のキリシタン国の者で、天帝（神）の宗門を広める弘法のために渡来した。日々長崎の霊社仏閣を徘徊するので、その異相を見る人々が群集をなした。ある者はその異相を絵に写し、書付に記して中国地方に伝え、京都にも入った。信長は江州安土にいてこれを伝え聞き、召し寄せて見ようと欲したが、領主竜造寺が引き止めることを思慮して、計略を巡らし、将軍家の従臣でサブカヤ源内という者を荷担させ、密かに義昭公が異国人を召し寄せるという偽の御教書を作成して、源内を上使として西国へ派遣した。

源内は九州に到着して御教書を竜造寺に渡したところ、隆信は御教書を拝見し、偽書であることを知らなかったので、謹んで畏れ、すぐに千家司の中西監物、笹原弥左衛門を同行させて京都に送った。信長は鳥羽の四ツ塚辺りへ人数を派遣してこれを迎え取らせ、江州安土の城下へ引き取った。竜造寺の送りの者が帰って隆信に信長の密謀の旨を申し上げると、隆信は大いに憤ったが、どうしようもなかった。この異国人の京都到着は九月三日であった。

His teeth were white as snow, like a horse's teeth, and his claws resembled those of a bear's paws. His hair was gray-colored, and he appeared to be about fifty years old. His name was Vulcan Bateren, and he was from a Namban Christian country, having come to spread the religious teachings of the Heavenly Emperor (God). Daily he wandered around the sacred shrines and Buddhist temples of Nagasaki, and people gathered in crowds to see his strange appearance. Some drew his unusual features in pictures and recorded them in writing, spreading the news to the Chūgoku region and into the capital. Nobunaga, who was in Azuchi in Ōmi Province, heard of this and wanted to summon and see him, but considering that lord Ryūzōji would try to prevent this, he devised a stratagem. He enlisted a retainer of the Shōgun's house named Sabukaya Gen'nai, secretly forged an official letter supposedly from Yoshiaki summoning the foreigner, and sent Gen'nai as an envoy to the western provinces.

Gen'nai arrived in Kyushu and delivered the official letter to Ryūzōji. When Takashige examined the letter, not knowing it was a forgery, he respectfully and fearfully complied, immediately adding Senke-no-tsukasa Nakanishi Kenmotsu and Sasahara Yazaemon as escorts and sending them up to Kyoto. Nobunaga sent forces to the Yotsuzuka area near Toba to receive them and brought them back to the castle town of Azuchi in Ōmi Province. When Ryūzōji's escort returned and reported to Takashige about Nobunaga's secret plot, Takashige was greatly angered but could do nothing about it. This foreigner's arrival in Kyoto was on the third day of the ninth month.
