その前である八月二十四日、摂州住吉の社が鳴動して松の木六十六本が倒れたという件について、神主摂津守三位国宗が奏聞した。朝廷で議論があって、松の木が倒れること自体はそれほどのことではないが、その木の数が六十六本と限られていることは、日本の国数（六十六か国）に相当し、凶事とするべきであるとして、寺社に命じて祈祷を行った。このような異人が渡来して邪法を広め、人民に害をなすであろう前兆であろう。
こうして異国人は江州安土の城下に到着すると、妙法寺という寺に入って三日間休息し、九月三日に城中へ召し出され、信長が謁見された。
ウルガン・バテレンの身なりは「アビト」という物を着ている。毛氈のような類いで、裾は短く袖は長い。左前に合わせており、その体裁は甚だ卑しく、声は鳩の鳴くようで言葉が分からない。蝙蝠が羽を広げたようで、最も見苦しい。名香を懐中して御殿に薫らせている。
ウルガンが信長に対して礼をする作法は、両膝の指先を揃えて向こうへ差し出し、両手を組んで胸に当て、頭を仰ぐという、誠に不思議な礼式である。
献上する物は七種類：七十五里を一目で見る遠眼鏡、芥子を卵のように見る近目鏡、猛虎の皮五十枚、毛氊五町四方、見当のつかない鉄砲、伽羅百斤、八畳吊りの蚊帳、一寸八分の香箱に入るコンペイトウ。

Prior to this, on the twenty-fourth day of the eighth month, the Sumiyoshi Shrine in Settsu Province experienced tremors and sixty-six pine trees fell down. The chief priest, Settsu-no-kami San-i Kunimune, reported this to the court. The imperial court deliberated and concluded that while the falling of pine trees itself was not particularly significant, the fact that the number was specifically sixty-six trees, corresponding to the number of provinces in Japan, should be considered an ominous sign. Therefore, temples and shrines were ordered to conduct prayers. This strange foreigner's arrival to spread heretical teachings and harm the people was likely a portent of this.
Thus, when the foreigner arrived at the castle town of Azuchi in Ōmi Province, he entered a temple called Myōhōji and rested for three days. On the third day of the ninth month, he was summoned to the castle, and Nobunaga granted him an audience.
Vulcan Bateren wore something called "abito" - a type of cloth resembling felt, with short hem and long sleeves, worn left-over-right. His appearance was quite base, his voice like a dove's cooing with incomprehensible speech. He looked most unsightly, like a bat with spread wings. He carried fine incense in his breast pocket, perfuming the palace halls.
Vulcan's method of paying respect to Nobunaga was a truly mysterious ritual: aligning the tips of both knees and extending them forward, folding both hands against his chest, and tilting his head back.
The items he presented were seven types: a telescope that could see seventy-five ri at a glance, a magnifying glass that could make mustard seeds appear like eggs, fifty tiger skins, felt measuring five chō square, a matchlock gun of unknown type, one hundred kin of aloe wood, a mosquito net for an eight-tatami room, and konpeitō (sugar confections) contained in an incense box measuring one sun and eight bu.
