原ルニ夫。天文ノ末ニ商客アリテ。西夷イタリヤ
ノ国ロオマノ京ヨリ来テ。船ヲ豊後国ニ寄ス。其
船路ヲ尋ルニ西海ヨリ南方ニ向テユキ。南方ヨ
リ北方ニ向テ。日本ニ来ル故ニ。倭国ノ人ハ是ヲ
呼テ。南蛮人トスソノ船中ヲ見ルニ。商客棹郎ス
ヘテ二百余人。其中ニ形服衆人ニ異ナル人。両箇

Originally, at the end of the Tenbun era, there were merchants who came from Rome, the capital of Italy in the western barbarian lands, and anchored their ship in Bungo Province. When we inquire about their sea route, they traveled from the western seas toward the south, then from the south toward the north to reach Japan. Therefore, the people of Japan called them "Nanban-jin" (Southern Barbarians). Looking inside their ship, there were merchants, sailors, and others, totaling more than two hundred people. Among them, we see two people whose appearance and clothing differed from the masses. One was called San Francisco Xavier, and the other was called Gaspar. These two people are called "Bateren."
