現代語訳
その頃美濃両国に徘徊する二人の小児がいた。一人は友市、一人は猿之助という。あるとき、所の庄屋の飼い犬が非人に噛みついたので、非人は腹を立て、犬を打ち殺そうと怒った。庄屋はこれを聞きつけて「我が方の犬を殺せば、我もまた非人めを打ち殺そう」と怒って騒いだ。
かの猿之助はこの喧嘩を見て大いに笑い、「この諍いには損得がある。乞食が犬を殺せば、乞食は庄屋殿に殺される。庄屋殿はまた乞食を殺した罪で殿様に殺される。犬と庄屋の二つの命が乞食が一つの命に代われば、こちらは損である。あちらは得である。べらぼうな喧嘩だ」と笑った。庄屋はこれを聞いて感心し、「なるほど、この世知辛い世の中に損をするような出入りなら止めよう」と、商売道具を両剣にして立ち帰った。友市はまたこの騒ぎに百姓衆の腰刺げ槍や髪入れを奪い取った。さてこそ、この二人の育ちは善悪と品は変われども、知恵才覚はたくましく見えたのである。

Around that time, there were two children wandering around the two provinces of Mino. One was called Tomoichi, and the other Sarunosuke. One day, a dog belonging to the local village headman bit a beggar, so the beggar became angry and tried to kill the dog. When the village headman heard this, he became furious and caused a commotion, saying "If you kill my dog, I will also kill you, beggar!"
Sarunosuke watched this quarrel and laughed heartily, saying: "There is profit and loss in this dispute. If the beggar kills the dog, the beggar will be killed by the village headman. The village headman will then be killed by his lord for the crime of killing the beggar. If the lives of the dog and the village headman are exchanged for the beggar's one life, this side loses and that side gains. What a foolish quarrel!" When the village headman heard this, he was impressed and said, "Indeed, if this is the kind of dispute that causes loss in this difficult world, I should stop it." He took his business tools as his two swords and returned home. Tomoichi, meanwhile, used this commotion to steal the short swords and hair ornaments of the local farmers. Thus, although these two children had different upbringings and moral characters, their wisdom and cleverness appeared quite robust.
