その頃美濃国栗原山に一人の隠者がいた。竹中半兵衛重治（重春）という僧で、聡明英知にして軍学に長けていたので、義辰はしきりに人を遣わして重春を招いた。もとより重春は武田家の浪人であって二君に仕えず、いろいろと辞退に及んだ。大垣三郎がたびたび竹中に対面して様々に勧めたので、重春はついに斎藤方に属して、それよりたびたびの合戦に打ち勝ったということである。
足利家の老臣に仁木弾正左衛門尉国行の息子で、太郎国定という者がいた。父国行は「織竜丸」「免竜丸」という二振りの名剣を紛失させ、詮議のため他国していて人手にかかったので、太郎国定は名剣の行方と父の仇を討とうと都を立ち出で、三河国に軽い身分の人となって暮らしていた。東国西峨嶽の来作という者の娘お染と、いつしか夫婦の契りを結び、人知れず忍び語らっていた。

Around that time, there was a hermit living on Mount Kurihara in Mino Province. This was a monk named Takenaka Hanbei Shigeharu (Shigeharu), who was intelligent and wise, and skilled in military strategy. Yoshitatsu repeatedly sent messengers to invite Shigeharu to join him. Originally, Shigeharu was a masterless samurai from the Takeda house who would not serve two lords, so he declined in various ways. However, since Ogaki Saburo repeatedly met with Takenaka and urged him in many ways, Shigeharu finally joined the Saito faction, and from then on, he won many battles.
Among the senior retainers of the Ashikaga house was Niki Danjosamon-no-jo Kuniyuki, whose son was called Taro Kunisada. His father Kuniyuki had lost two famous swords called "Oriryu-maru" and "Menryu-maru," and while he was in another province for the investigation, he fell into enemy hands. So Taro Kunisada left the capital to find the whereabouts of the famous swords and avenge his father, becoming a person of humble status in Mikawa Province. He secretly fell in love with Osome, the daughter of a man named Raisaku from Saiga-dake in the eastern provinces, and they formed a marital bond, carrying on their relationship in secret.
