現代語訳
ある時次郎右衛門が五右衛門へ意見をしても聞き入れず、憂き目に遭わぬうちに、俺から先に違いして、この苦言を助からんと懐剣を抜き放つ。五右衛門が押し留めても留まらないゆえ、面倒だと懐剣をひっくり返す拍子に、娘小冬の胸先に当たり、「わっ」と言って倒れた。次郎右衛門は狂気のごとく嘆き悲しみ、「さてさて物の報いというものは恐ろしいものだ。これについて話がある。私は先年播磨国舞子の浜にて旅の女が病気を起こし伏せっていたのを気の毒に思い、いろいろと介抱してやった。ところがふとその女が金の財布を襟にかけているのを見るより悪心が起こり、幸い金の入用のことがあって欲しい最中、若い時の後先なし、無残にもかの女の脇腹を刺し通し、
金を奪い取って帰ろうとしたところ、にわかに赤子の鳴く声が聞こえ、怪しくふと振り返って見れば、女の傷口より生まれ出て泣く声に、私も初めてひどい心も直ちに悲しや、その子を連れて帰り育て上げたのはそなただ。今まで包み隠していたが、そなたが成人して今悪党となり、ついには親の命をも取るべき様子。そなたの母を殺した報いにて小冬が思わぬこの最期、その上私もそなたゆえついには非業の死を遂げん。報いの程の恐ろしや」と泣く泣く語ったということだ。

At one time, when Jirōemon tried to admonish Goemon, he would not listen. Before meeting with misfortune, Jirōemon thought to end this bitter reproof by taking his own life first, and drew his concealed sword. Though Goemon tried to restrain him, he would not be stopped, so finding it troublesome, Goemon deflected the concealed sword, but in doing so it struck his daughter Kofuyu in the chest. She cried "Ah!" and collapsed. Jirōemon lamented and grieved as if mad, saying: "Indeed, the workings of karmic retribution are truly fearsome. There is a story behind this. Years ago in Harima Province at Maiko Beach, I found a traveling woman who had fallen ill and was lying there. Taking pity on her, I tended to her in various ways. But when I suddenly noticed that the woman had a purse of gold hanging from her collar, evil thoughts arose in my heart. As I happened to be in great need of money at the time, in the thoughtlessness of youth, I cruelly stabbed through that woman's side.
When I tried to steal the money and return home, I suddenly heard the cry of a baby. Startled, I turned around to look, and from the woman's wound a child was being born and crying. For the first time, even my cruel heart was immediately moved to sadness. The child I brought home and raised—that child is you. I have kept this hidden until now, but you have grown up and become a villain, and now seem ready to take even your parent's life. As retribution for killing your mother, Kofuyu meets this unexpected end, and moreover, because of you I too shall meet an unnatural death. How fearsome is this retribution!" Thus he spoke through his tears.
