現代語訳
金々先生は日々に驕り放題で、今は身代（財産）も借金だらけと見えたので、父の文随は大いに怒り、手代の源四郎の勧めに任せて、金々先生の借財を払い、昔の姿のままで追い出してしまった。
手代の源四郎は初めは金々先生をそそのかし、多くの金銀を使わせ、その余りは皆自分の懐に入れていた。よって物を盗むことを「お源四郎」とは言うのである。
「もしもし、お餅ができました」
金々先生は追い出され、今は立ち寄るべき当てもなく、どうしようかと呆れ果てていたところ、餅搗きの杵の音に驚いて起き上がって見ると、一炊の夢であって、注文した粟餅はまだできあがっていなかった。そこで金兵衛に横手打ちを食らわせ、「私は夢の中で文随の子となって栄華を極めたが、それでも三十年だった。そうであれば人間一生の楽しみも、わずかに粟餅一臼分の間のことだ」と初めて悟り、これよりすぐに西方（浄土）へ引っ込んでしまった。
英語訳
Kinkin-sensei lived each day in extravagance and arrogance, and now his assets appeared to be nothing but debt, so his father Bunzui became greatly angered. Following the recommendation of his clerk Genshirō, he paid off Kinkin-sensei's debts and threw him out, leaving him in his original state.
The clerk Genshirō had initially incited Kinkin-sensei, made him spend large amounts of gold and silver, and pocketed all the surplus for himself. Therefore, stealing things came to be called "doing a Genshirō."
"Excuse me, sir, your rice cakes are ready!"
Kinkin-sensei had been thrown out and now had nowhere to turn, wondering what to do in complete bewilderment, when he was startled awake by the sound of rice cake pounding. When he looked around, it had all been a dream lasting only as long as it takes to cook rice, and the millet cakes he had ordered were not yet finished. So he gave Kinbei a slap to the side, saying, "In my dream I became Bunzui's son and enjoyed the height of prosperity, but even that lasted only thirty years. If that's the case, then the pleasures of a human lifetime amount to no more than the time it takes to pound one mortar of millet cakes." Having realized this for the first time, he immediately withdrew to the Pure Land.
