昔、とある田舎に金村屋金兵衛という人がいた。生まれつき心が優雅で、浮世の楽しみを尽くそうと思ったが、とても貧しくて心のままにならなかった。そこでつくづく思いついて、繁華な都へ出て奉公して金を稼ぎ、世に出て思うままに浮世の楽しみを極めようと思い立った。まず江戸の方へと志したが、名高い目黒不動尊は運の神なので、ここに参詣して運の程を祈ろうとお参りした。しかし早くも日も夕方になり、とても空腹になったので、名物の粟餅を食べようと立ち寄った。

「なんでも江戸へ出れば万事うまくいくと聞いております。半端な玉ではなく、大きく出かけて贅沢を極めましょう。」

そもそも目黒不動尊は霊験あらたかで、広く商人の知るところである。本尊は慈覚大師の作で、寺号を龍泉寺という。この所の名物に粟餅、並びに餅花というものがある。竹を割って華鬘のように結び、これに赤白黄の餅を花のようにつける。よって餅花という。

Long ago, in a certain countryside, there lived a man called Kinmuraya Kinbei. Born with an elegant heart, he wished to fully enjoy the pleasures of the floating world, but being extremely poor, he could not do as his heart desired. Therefore, after much contemplation, he decided to go out to the bustling capital to work as a servant and earn money, so that he could make his way in the world and indulge in the pleasures of the floating world to his heart's content. First, he set his sights on Edo, but since the famous Meguro Fudo-son is a god of fortune, he decided to make a pilgrimage there to pray for his luck. However, as the day had already turned to evening and he had become quite hungry, he stopped to eat the famous awa-mochi (millet rice cakes).

"I've heard that if I go to Edo, everything will work out well. I won't settle for small gains - I'll go big and indulge in luxury to the fullest."

Now, Meguro Fudo-son is known for its miraculous efficacy and is widely known among merchants. The principal image was created by the Great Master Jikaku, and the temple is called Ryusen-ji. The local specialties here include awa-mochi and something called mochi-bana (rice cake flowers). They split bamboo and tie it like a keman (Buddhist decorative garland), attaching red, white, and yellow rice cakes to it like flowers. Hence it is called mochi-bana.
