現代語訳
金々先生はそそのかされて、ふと吉原へ行ったところ、それより「かけの」という遊女になじみ、親の意見も何のその、一寸先は闇の世の中、かの手代源四郎、万八を連れて、ひたすら歩みを運んでいった。
金々先生の出立ちは、八丈八反の羽織、縞散らしの綿の小袖、役者染めの下着、亀屋頭巾に目ばかり出し、人目を少し忍んでいた。
「旦那のお姿は、どうも言えません、すごい美男子です。」
【ここより下巻】
金々先生は遊女かけのに上がり詰め、今年も早や年の暮れ、折しも年越しの夜であった。かの源四郎の勧めで、豆は古しと金銭を升に入れ、節分の祝儀を祝っていた。
「福は内、鬼は外々」
「これはありがたい、山の鳶、烏、これを持って見巧業になり、山へと出かけよう。」
「これは厳しい、薩摩屋の源五兵衛と来ている、とんと梅が枝餅もどき、ありがたい。」
英語訳
Kinkin-sensei was persuaded and suddenly went to Yoshiwara, where he became intimate with a courtesan called "Kakeno." Dismissing his parents' advice, in a world where an inch ahead is darkness, he took along clerk Genshirō and Man'hachi, walking determinedly forward.
Kinkin-sensei's outfit consisted of a haori coat made from eight tan of Hachijō silk, a small-sleeved kimono with scattered stripe pattern made of cotton, underwear dyed in the actor style, and a Kameya hood showing only his eyes, somewhat concealing himself from public view.

Kinkin-sensei became completely devoted to the courtesan Kakeno. This year too quickly came to an end, and it happened to be New Year's Eve night. At the suggestion of Genshirō, saying "beans are old-fashioned," they put gold coins in a measuring box and celebrated the Setsubun ceremony.
"Fortune in, demons out, out!"
"How grateful this is! Mountain hawks and crows - taking these, one becomes skilled and heads out to the mountains."
"This is strict! Satsuya's Gengobei has come - this is just like umegae-mochi, how grateful."
