東京ハ古ヨリ唐土
ニ属セル国ニテ中
華ノ文字ヲ用ル尤詞ハ別ナリ古唐土ヨリ
交趾（コウチ）ト云シハ此国也末代ニ至テ両国ニ分レ東辺ヲ東京ト云南辺ヲ
広南ト云今ハ広南ノミ交趾ト号ス風俗相同シキ故ニ別ニ交趾ヲ

５　東京（トンキン）人

東京は古より唐土に属する国で、中華の文字を用いるが、言葉は別である。古く唐土より交趾（コウチ）と言われたのはこの国である。近世に至って両国に分かれ、東辺を東京と言い、南辺を広南と言う。今は広南のみを交趾と号する。風俗が相似ているため、別に交趾を図示しない。いずれも温暖な国である。北極地を出ること凡そ五十六度である。

5. Tonkin People

Tonkin is a country that has belonged to Chinese territory since ancient times, using Chinese characters, though the language is different. What was called Kōchi (Cochinchina) by the Chinese in ancient times refers to this country. In recent times it was divided into two countries: the eastern region is called Tonkin and the southern region is called Guangnan. Now only Guangnan is called Cochinchina. Since their customs are similar, Cochinchina is not illustrated separately. Both are warm countries. They are located approximately fifty-six degrees north of the equator.
