現代語訳
人皇六十一代朱雀の帝、天慶年中、平将門が東国に謀反を振るい、人民これを嘆いた。この事が京都へ聞こえ、藤原秀郷が勅を受け、討手に馳せ向かう。
「どうぞ将門を打ち留めてくれろ」
「貴様は俵藤太だと承ったが、俵屋の吉乃はどうしたの、いつもご盛んかの」
「これは秀忠、この間度々禁裏様からお人が参ったが軽率であった。さてもって一続きであろう。松葉屋か丁子屋か玉屋か扇屋か、ただし、ぐっとひねって仲町のお花屋かの、おらが奴が言付けはしなんだか」
「いえさい、承知仕りました。相々禁裏様のこんな事をおっしゃる時は、なんと挨拶するものかしらねえ」
「秀郷とは申しますが、里ではない男さ」
英語訳
During the reign of the 61st Emperor Suzaku, in the Tenkyō era, Taira no Masakado raised a rebellion in the eastern provinces, and the people lamented this. When this matter was heard in Kyoto, Fujiwara no Hidesato received an imperial edict and rushed forth as part of the punitive force.
"Please strike down Masakado!"
"I heard you are Tawara Tōta, but how is Yoshino of the Tawara-ya? Is she still doing well?"
"This is Hidetada. Recently, messengers have come repeatedly from the Imperial Palace, but that was careless. Well, this must be all connected. Is it Matsuba-ya, Chōji-ya, Tama-ya, or Ōgi-ya? Or rather, if I think hard about it, could it be the flower shop in Nakamachi? Did my fellow send any message?"
"Well, I understand. When His Majesty speaks of such matters, I wonder how one should respond."
"I am called Hidesato, but I'm not a man of the village."
