したふてはせ下るへきよしを申す徳川殿御消息を
なされて感し仰下さるかゝる所に上方又軍起て徳川殿を
かたふけ参らせんとす九国のうちにしては黒田入道はかりそ
東国無二の御方たるへきと思ひけれは祐兵ひそかに
入道か許に使者をたつて祐兵におゐてはかたく東国
に組しまいらすへきと思ひさためて本国にはせ帰
て九国のかたきとや戦はん又大坂にあつて兵をや起
すへき入道殿の御謀をこそ承らめといはせけれは如水
入道わ殿か加勢上方にあつて軍起さん事しかるへからす

井伊の侍従に付いて急いで軍勢を召し集め、御後を慕って駆け下るべき旨を申し上げた。徳川殿は御書状をなされて感謝の仰せを下された。そうしている所に上方でまた軍が起こって徳川殿を倒そうとした。九国のうちでは黒田入道だけが東国無二の御方となるべきと思ったので、祐兵はひそかに入道の許に使者を立てて「祐兵においては固く東国に味方申し上げるべきと決意して、本国に駆け帰って九国の敵と戦うべきか、また大坂にあって兵を起こすべきか、入道殿の御謀略を承りたい」と言わせた。如水入道は「貴殿が加勢して上方にあって軍を起こすことは適当ではない。

速やかに本国に下って軍を起こすのがよろしかろう」と答えた。祐兵は「それならば」と出立しようとした所、たちまち病の床に伏して自分が国に帰ることが叶わなくなった。子息左京亮祐慶が今年十一歳になったので、家臣郎党を付けて本国に派遣した。国にいる家臣郎党たちは急いで軍勢を従え、九月晦日に飫肥城を出立して（稲津掃部が大将である）高橋右近将監の宮崎城を攻め落とし、島津中務大輔の佐土原城に押し寄せた。佐土原の後詰めをしようとして薩摩国の軍勢が多数出陣してきて、あちこちで戦ったが、ついに一度の不覚もなかった。穆佐・倉岡・高岡・綾合等の地を打ち従えて

Among the nine provinces, only Kuroda Nyūdō would be an unparalleled ally of the eastern provinces, so Sukehei secretly sent a messenger to the Nyūdō saying, "Sukehei has firmly resolved to side with the eastern provinces, but should he rush back to his home province to fight the enemies of the nine provinces, or should he remain in Osaka and raise troops? He wishes to hear your strategic counsel." Josui Nyūdō replied, "It would not be appropriate for you to assist by raising troops in the Kamigata region.

When Sukehei was about to depart saying "Very well then," he suddenly fell ill and was unable to return to his province. His son Sakyō-no-suke Sukeyoshi, who had turned eleven this year, was sent down to the home province with retainers and followers attached to him. The retainers and followers in the province quickly assembled forces and departed from Obi Castle on the last day of the ninth month. (Inatsu Kambu was the general.) They attacked and captured Takahashi Ukon Shōgen's Miyazaki Castle and pressed against Shimazu Nakatsukasa-dayū's Sadowara Castle. Satsuma forces came out in large numbers to provide rear support for Sadowara, and battles were fought here and there, but [the Itō forces] ultimately suffered not a single defeat. They subdued the lands of Mukasa, Kuraoka, Takaoka, Ayaai and others.
