Shuri-dayū Minamoto no Hideshige was the second son of Se-hyōe-no-jō Hidehide and younger brother of Uemon-dayū Hidemasa. His grandfather Sado-no-kami Shigekiyo was originally of the Kanmu Heishi clan, a descendant of Takayama Saburō Shigetō, the third son of Chichibu Shimotsuke-no-gon-no-kami Shigezumi, who was six generations removed from Chinzei-fu Shōgun Taira no Yoshifumi. For generations they lived in Hitachi Province. In Shigekiyo's time, he went up to the capital and then proceeded to Settsu Province. He married the daughter of a certain Nakagawa Saemon-no-jō, who was a descendant of Saemon-no-jō Kiyomura of the Tada Genji of that province, and inherited that family's house. Thus he changed his original surname and became a member of the Genji clan. He came to use the name Nakagawa. In the first year of Tenshō (1573), in the 7th month, discord arose between Shōgun Yoshiaki and Oda Nobunaga.
