伊賀守惟政か首取て見参にこそ入てけれ村重大に驚きいか
てかくたやすく和田をうつてありつるといふ重秀さんは重秀
心に思ひけるは敵御方の戦明日に決すへしされうたるゝもの
たかひにすくなかるへからすあすはおなしく死せん命此夜の
うちにすてなんには和田か首取得ん事いと安かるへし

夜物なれたらんつはものして淀川の浅深をふみ見んに

うちとつてくれんす物をたとへ惟政か首とり得すうたれ
たらんにもおほくの敵の中へ入て大将の首とらんとて

敵の大将をすべて榜（ぼう）に記し、「何某の首を取った者には、これほどの褒賞を与える」と書いて陣頭に立てられた。《割書：一説では、この榜は荒木摂津守村重が立てたとも言われている》瀬兵衛尉重秀はこの時、織田殿の大将荒木摂津守村重の配下に属していた。この榜を見て筆を取り、和田の名前の上に点を付けた。見る人は奇異に思ったが、この夜子の刻（午前0時頃）になって、ついに伊賀守惟政の首を取って参上した。村重は大いに驚き、「どのようにしてこんなに簡単に和田を討ったのか」と言うと、重秀は答えた。重秀が心に思ったことは、「敵と味方の戦いは明日に決するだろう。殺される者も互いに少なくないであろう。明日は同じように死ぬ命を、この夜のうちに捨てるならば、和田の首を取ることは非常に容易であろう。

敵は必ず明日の戦いを重大事と思うであろう。きっとこの夜は物に慣れた武者を使って淀川の浅い深いを偵察に行かせるに違いない。惟政はそのような大将である。物見の者たちだけに頼るべきではない。自ら来て見るであろう。大将が出立つことは疑う余地がない。ああ、討ち取ってやろう。たとえ惟政の首を取り得ずに討たれたとしても、多くの敵の中に入って大将の首を取ろうとして討ち死にしたならば、その佳名は朽ちることはない」と思い定めた。敵が近づかないうちに川を渡って伺おうと、水を渡ってあちら側の岸の柳の陰に伏して隠れて待った。案の定、和田が二陣に向かって出てきた。重秀はひそかにその陣に紛れ込み、ついに
