首を討ち取って水中に飛び込んで逃れ出て参りました」と申したところ、聞く人は大いに感心した。《割書：世間では、この時どこからともなく山伏一人が参って、和田の鎧兜、馬、武具の様子をよく教えて討たせたという説を記したものもある。重秀がこのように思い計らって命を捨てて討ち取って逃れたことは、勇気と謀略と、また水泳が達者であったことによるのか。これらのことをどのような神の助けよりも奇特なことと言わずにいられない。この時、年齢もまだ若かったであろう。世の人はこのような間近で奇異な振る舞いを見ると、何とも思わずに事を神に寄せるのは愚かなことの一つである。○またこの時重秀は和田の名前に点を付けて家に帰り、妻に向かって事の次第を語り、「生きてふたたび帰らなければ、また参上するであろう」と言ったところ、妻は少しも嘆く様子もなく、「それでは軍の支度を」と言って励まし、猪の吸い物をすすめ、酒を取って世話をしたという。これも女子としては珍しいことである》同年六年の十月、荒木は織田殿に背き、伊丹・花隈・茨木・高槻等の城に軍兵を分けて立てこもった。茨木の城は重秀並びに石田伊予守・渡辺勘大夫等に守らせた。

Hidehide surrendered to Lord Oda and on the night of the twenty-fourth day of the eleventh month welcomed his forces and drove out Ishida and Watanabe. Since Hidehide and others' merit in Araki's ultimate destruction was enormous, Nobunaga's appreciation was profound, and he granted him Ibaraki Castle. {{Marginal note: This is according to the Azuchi Diary. The family genealogy shows that Hidehide initially built and lived in Ibaraki Castle following his father, and belonged to Ikeda Katsumasa. He later followed Araki.
