【右頁上段】
茶屋の宿代のつけで行くことや、禿の仕着せまで、表向きを取り繕うのは皆、揚巻の稼ぎから搾り取られるので、物前（五節句など特別な出費の前）には水も飲めないところを、やはり平気で樽酒で青くなるどころか、うがい茶碗で煽りつけて、しゃっきんこい（酒に酔って威勢のいい様子）を言いまくる。
体は揚巻だが、心は助六なので、温かい巻物をやったようではない。

駕籠代だけでも十両や十五両では済まない。
緑屋の書き付けでも取りに遣わそう。
下面に菩薩、辛きなりけり。

馬鹿らしいことを言うな。尼に肉汁を出せと言っても、出せないものが、どうして出されるものか。三浦屋の揚巻でございます。一番待ってもらいましょう。

助六は番頭新兵衛。助六の身持ちの放埒も、ひとえに揚巻のせいだと思い込み、身請けして店の花とすれば、身持ちも直り、商売も稼ぐ心も出るだろうと、魂の入れ替わっていることは知らず、揚巻の身の代七百両にて手を打ち、まんまと身請けしたけれど、思いがけず揚巻は本当に「今日から見世も引きます」という株引きである。

The inn fees at tea houses paid on credit, and even the uniforms for the kamuro (child attendants), all the expenses for keeping up appearances are squeezed from Agemaki's earnings. So during "mono-mae" (before special occasions like the five seasonal festivals when extra expenses are needed), she can barely afford water, yet he still drinks barrel sake without concern, not just turning blue but gulping it down from a gargling bowl, shouting drunkenly and boastfully.
Her body is Agemaki but her heart is Sukeroku, so it's not like giving warm makimono (scrolls).

Sukeroku is the head clerk Shinbei. Believing that Sukeroku's dissolute behavior is entirely due to Agemaki, he thinks that if he ransoms her and makes her the flower of his shop, her behavior will improve and she'll develop a mind for business and earning money. Not knowing that their souls have switched, he agrees to pay seven hundred ryō for Agemaki's ransom and successfully redeems her, but unexpectedly, Agemaki truly declares she's "retiring from the pleasure quarters today" - a case of "stock withdrawal."
