揚巻は思いがけず身請けされ、足も野暮な足袋履きになり（年中素足だったのが）、いつも結っていた髪に櫛を当て、算盤勘定をはじき出し、とんだ堅実な者になって、米屋の白鼠（主家に忠実な雇人）だと周りの評判は良いけれども、とかく喧嘩好きで大酒を飲んで太平楽を言うのには、新兵衛も大いに困っている。
「わしの体はしっかりしているが、お前を忘れぬぞ」と言うものだ。

Agemaki, unexpectedly ransomed, now wears ungainly tabi (split-toe socks) on feet that used to be bare year-round. She combs her hair that was always done up, works the abacus for calculations, and has become quite a serious person. While the neighborhood reputation is good, calling her a "white mouse" of the rice shop (meaning a faithful employee), her quarrelsome nature and habit of drinking heavily and talking nonsense greatly troubles Shinbei.
"My body is strong, but I won't forget you," she says.
