昔のこと、日本橋のたもとに「いぶきくんさい」という医者がいて、どんな難病でも灸治療ですぐに効果を見せるので、皆から「もぐさ医者」とあだ名をつけられていた。その評判は、碑文谷の仁王様も大きなわらじを脱ぎ捨てて裸足で逃げ出すほどであった。
町内に宿なしの行き倒れ者がいて、番太郎をはじめ、大家や五人組も扱いに困り果て、二百文で処理しようとしたが承知せず、いろいろとゆすってきたので、かの薫臍医に治療を頼んだ。

医者は「心得た」と言って、もぐさの箱を持参してきた。親指の腹ほどの大きさの灸を宿なしの尻の穴にお見舞いしたところ、宿なしもこれで大いに参ってしまい、さっそく先の町へ送り出した。その治療の見事さといったら、実に見事なものであった。
町内の者たちは大喜びで、礼に来た。薫臍医は思いがけず「礼金なら」というところで話を締めくくった。

Long ago, at the foot of Nihonbashi, there was a doctor called "Ibuki Kunsai" who could show immediate results with moxa treatment for any difficult illness, so everyone nicknamed him the "moxa doctor." His reputation was such that even the Nio guardian deity of Himonya would throw off his large straw sandals and flee barefoot.
In the neighborhood there was a homeless vagrant who had collapsed, and the ban-taro (neighborhood watchman), landlords, and five-person groups were at their wit's end trying to deal with him. They tried to handle the matter for 200 mon, but he wouldn't agree and kept extorting them, so they asked the kunsai doctor for treatment.

The doctor said "I understand" and brought his moxa box. He administered moxa about the size of a thumb pad to the vagrant's anus, whereupon the vagrant was greatly subdued and was promptly sent off to the next district. The skill of that treatment was truly remarkable.
The townspeople were overjoyed and came to give thanks. The kunsai doctor unexpectedly concluded with "if it's about payment..."
