また、その頃、千両役者として知られた「ひげの生粋」という大尽が、松が枝屋の揚巻に入れ込み、いろいろと口説いているが、助六という馴染みの男がいるため思うようにならず、大いに腹を立てて、若い者たちに頼んで助六を仲の町の人通りの中で殴らせた。

Around that time, there was a wealthy patron called "Hige no Ikioto" (Whiskers the Dandy), known as a senryo actor, who was infatuated with Agemaki of the Matsugae-ya brothel. Though he tried various approaches to win her over, there was a regular customer named Sukeroku, so things didn't go as he wished. Becoming greatly enraged, he hired some young men to beat up Sukeroku in the crowded streets of Naka-no-cho.
