暁（あかつき）といふ限（かきり）あり爰（ここ）に
名（な）にしおふ青楼（せいろう）の栄（ゑい）
花（くは）はさくらに春（はる）の長（なか）
きをしらす郭公（ほとゝきす）に薄（うす）
着（き）をしらす秋（あき）たつ風（かせ）
に暮（くれ）の淋（さひ）しみをしらす
雪（ゆき）の降（ふる）日も寒（さむ）さを
知らすかゝる限（かきり）なきたの
しみこそまことの栄（ゑい）
花（くは）はいふなるへしこの
頃（ころ）一人の大尽（たいしん）来（きた）り戯（たはむれ）に
此里（このさと）の遊君（ゆうくん）の角力（すまひ）を
見まほしきよしを 求（もと）む
里雀（りしやく）てふもの承（うけたまは）り四（し）
季（き）の花（はな）を名君（めいくん）の姿（すかた）に
よそへ春夏（はるなつ）を東（ひかし）と
さため秋冬（あきふゆ）を西（にし）と極（きは）
めて既（すて）にすまひを初
現代語訳
暁というものには限りがある。ここに
名高い遊郭の栄華がある。
花は桜に春の長さを
知らせず、ほととぎすに薄着を
知らせず、秋立つ風に
夕暮れの寂しさを知らせず、
雪の降る日も寒さを
知らない。このような限りないたの
しみこそ真の栄華である。
花は言うのであろう。この
頃、一人の大尽がやって来て、戯れに
この里の遊女の相撲を
見たいとの希望を求めた。
里雀という者がこれを承り、四
季の花を名だたる遊女の姿に
なぞらえ、春夏を東と
定め、秋冬を西と極
めて、すでに相撲を始めた
英語訳
There is a limit to what is called dawn. Here lies
the glory of the famous pleasure quarters.
Flowers do not tell the cherry blossoms of spring's
length, do not tell the cuckoo of light
clothing, do not tell the autumn wind of
evening's loneliness,
and even on snowy days do not know
the cold. Such limitless plea-
sure is true glory.
The flowers would say: Recently,
a wealthy patron came and playfully
requested to see
sumo wrestling among the courtesans of this quarter.
One called Risyaku received this request, and likened the four
seasons' flowers to the forms of famous courtesans,
determining spring and summer as East
and setting autumn and winter as West,
already beginning the sumo match.
