私並唐人共不残其諭之絵仏之様成？ヲ？？？足に而踏セ右
相済御奉行所江御召連相成御白洲江出候處御役人向御出張有之又又
？前之様成る絵仏ヲ踏セ夫ゟ身之廻り荷物等御改相済御白洲上之方
御奉行衆江罷出候處彼地二而切支丹宗門等ハ見請不申哉お糺
二付一切見受不申旨御答申上候處漂流之荒増御尋有之悉御聞
取相済御役人同道に而揚屋へ罷越追々に御呼出し有之漂流之始末御
吟味有之御請等ヲも申上候處翌午二月下旬之頃御奉行衆の節に而私
口書之趣与力衆御読聞有之候處御奉行衆御尋ニ相違無候哉と御申

聞人上当又与力衆於外国切支丹宗門に携無之見もせす御勧められもせす語之もせすと事候得共追而相顕候ははいか様之御咎と請付候

私並びに中国人たち全員が、その時の絵踏（キリシタンの聖像を描いた銅板）のような物を足で踏まされ、それが済んでから奉行所へお召し連れされ、お白洲に出たところ、役人方がお出張になり、また前と同様な絵仏を踏まされました。それから身の回りの荷物等をお改めになり、お白洲の上の方で奉行衆にお目にかかったところ、「かの地でキリシタン宗門などは見かけなかったか」とお尋ねになりましたので、一切見受けませんでしたとお答え申し上げました。その後、漂流の詳細についてお尋ねがあり、すべてお聞き取りが済んでから、役人同道で揚屋へ参り、追々にお呼び出しがあって漂流の始末についてご吟味があり、請書なども申し上げました。翌年二月下旬頃、奉行衆の前で私の口書の内容を与力衆がお読み聞かせになったところ、奉行衆から「お尋ねに相違ないか」とお申し

聞きになりました。また与力衆から「外国でキリシタン宗門に関わることなく、見もせず、勧められもせず、語りもしなかった」ということですが、後で明らかになった場合はいかような御咎めを受けても、何も申し分はありませんとのようにお読み聞かせの上、爪印をいたしました。
一、巳年七月十三日から私共太吉・伊之助三人とも十四、五畳敷ほどの揚屋に居住いたしました。翌日は御締まりがありましたが、翌々日からは戸前が開放されるようになったので、揚屋の御構内は日々歩行いたしました。この総御構は間口およそ一町ほど、奥行きは半町ほどもあり、中程で空家と土塀で仕切られていました。

I and all the Chinese were made to step on what seemed like picture tablets (copper plates with Christian images for the stepping ceremony), and after that was completed, we were summoned to the magistrate's office. When we appeared in the court, the officials came out, and again we were made to step on picture-buddhas similar to before. Then our personal belongings were inspected, and when we met with the magistrates in the upper part of the court, they inquired, "Did you not see any Christian sects in that land?" I answered that I had not seen any at all. After that, there were detailed inquiries about our drift voyage, and after they had heard everything, we went to the detention house accompanied by officials. We were called out repeatedly for examination regarding the circumstances of our drift voyage, and I also submitted written statements. Around late February of the following year, in the presence of the magistrates, the yoriki (deputy officials) read aloud the contents of my written statement, and the magistrates asked, "Is there no discrepancy with our inquiries?"

The yoriki also read aloud: "Regarding not being involved with Christian sects in foreign countries, not seeing, not being recommended, and not speaking of them" - but if this should later prove otherwise, whatever punishment may be imposed, I have no objections. After this reading, I affixed my thumbnail seal.
1. From July 13th of the year of the Snake, we three - Takichi, Inosuke, and I - were housed in a detention building of about fourteen or fifteen tatami mats. The next day we were confined, but from the day after that, the doors were left open, so we could walk around the detention compound daily. This entire compound was about one chō in frontage and about half a chō in depth, divided in the middle by vacant houses and earthen walls.
