一、私がこの所に逗留中は農民の家の世話になっていましたので、その家の田畑の作り方を見ました。およそ一町半ほどの田畑の周りに生垣をしてあり、植え付けている種物は、とうもろこし、かぼちゃ、真西瓜、煙草、唐辛子、薩摩芋、冬葱、さとうきびを作っていました。大根も作りましたが、非常に出来が悪いので、ほとんど作るのをやめてしまいました。田畑は砂地で、牛で耕し、年中夏冬の区別なく作り付けています。田畑の中に井戸はなく、水を入れる時は川上から樋を仕掛けて、朝夕に水を入れています。

1. During my stay in this place, I was cared for by a farming household, so I observed how that family cultivated their fields. Around approximately one and a half chō of farmland, they had made living hedges. The crops they planted were: corn, pumpkins, watermelons, tobacco, peppers, sweet potatoes, winter onions, and sugar cane. They also tried growing daikon radishes, but since they grew very poorly, they hardly cultivate them anymore. The farmland is sandy soil, plowed with oxen, and crops are planted year-round without distinction between summer and winter. There are no wells within the farmland, so when they need to water the crops, they set up troughs from upstream and add water morning and evening.
