奥地ゟ流来候木を拾ひ貯置候居所は地を堀室
屋之様に屋根を丸くいたし土にて塗其中に芝草を
敷罷在候此辺は「ラツコ、アザラシ」鮭鱈鱒なと多く
有之漁業而已を渡世にいたし申候右漁候魚類は
都て食物にいたし「ラツコ、アザラシ」之皮は魯西亜人と
布刃物之類と交易いたし尤魯西亜人出張所有之

いたし候由右往返いたし候船は日本船にては三四百石
積程に相見檣弐本有之艀船并近辺往通ひ候

外回りを包む革の余りで乗る人の身体にまとい付けるため、たとえ波に打ち返されても船の内はもちろん人の身体にも水が染み入らないように作ってある。この海獣のことは「セーウシ」と申し、形は馬ほどあり、面は馬より少し短く、両頬から下がる角の長さは三、四尺もあり、柔和な様子に見える。気候は暑さは弱く寒さは強く、夏でも漂流人たちは綿入れを二枚程度ずつ着ており、冬になると雪が大変多く積もり寒さが強く、手足もしびれるほどで外での働きはできず、皆住居に籠もっている。春の三月頃になってようやく雪も解けると漁業に取りかかる。

This sea animal is called "Sē-ushi," shaped like a horse, with a face slightly shorter than a horse's, and tusks hanging from both cheeks that are three to four feet long, appearing gentle in nature. The climate has mild heat but severe cold. Even in summer, the castaways wear about two padded garments each, and when winter comes, snow accumulates heavily and the cold is so severe that hands and feet become numb, making outdoor work impossible, so everyone stays confined to their dwellings. Around the third month of spring, when the snow finally melts, they begin fishing activities.
