を休み着物なとを着暮遊ひ歩行寺参り等
いたし申候且年越と申は無御座銘々誕生日に
至り候を年一ツと定申候
神仏之儀神と申は不及見聞寺院は所々に有之
本尊は絵馬之様なる物に人之形之様成物を書
有之候得共何歟不相分夫を本堂之様成所へ
懸置信心いたし候墓所も有之死者を葬候
時は長き棺を拵へ死者を仰向にねかし候て
入蓋を打付其儘親族之者打寄かつき寺へ
持参引導を請候上墓所へ持参り土葬にいたし

野面石を置夫に横文字を切付申候他国之
者をは其墓所へは葬せ不申別に他国者
斗葬候墓所御座候且寺之住持は惣髪にて

弟子之様成者も有之葬礼之時は右住持も
弟子も出何歟経文之様成物を読み葬申候
尤他国之者をは葬不申候既に漂流人之内吉
郎次病死いたし候節は外漂流人共打寄葬
候迄にて寺にては一向構ひ不申候

を休んで、着物などを着て遊び歩き、寺参りなどをする。また年越しというものはなく、それぞれの誕生日になったときを年を一つ取ったと定めている。
神仏について、神というものは見聞きしたことがない。寺院は各所にあり、本尊は絵馬のような物に人の形のようなものを描いてあるが、何であるかよく分からない。それを本堂のような所に掛けて置いて信心している。墓所もあり、死者を葬る時は長い棺を作り、死者を仰向けに寝かせて入れ、蓋を打ち付けて、そのまま親族の者が集まって担いで寺へ持参し、引導を請うた上で墓所へ持参って土葬にする。

死別は日本と同様に非常に悲しむ。石塔は大きな野面石を置き、それに横文字を刻み付ける。外国の者はその墓所へは葬らず、別に外国人だけを葬る墓所がある。また寺の住職は総髪で、髭も剃らず、袖幅の広い着物を着ている。その他弟子のような者もいて、葬礼の時は右の住職も弟子も出て、何か経文のようなものを読んで葬る。
もっとも外国の者は葬らない。既に漂流人の内で吉郎次が病死した際は、他の漂流人共が集まって葬ったまでで、寺では一向に関わらなかった。

and rest from work, dress in fine clothes to stroll about for pleasure, and visit temples. There is no year-end celebration; instead, they consider each person's birthday as when they age by one year.
Regarding gods and Buddhism, I have not seen or heard of any gods. Temples exist in various places, and their principal images are something like votive tablets on which human-like figures are painted, though I cannot tell what they represent. These are hung in hall-like buildings where people worship. There are also burial grounds, and when burying the dead, they construct long coffins, lay the deceased face-up inside, nail on the lid, then family members gather to carry it to the temple to request funeral rites before taking it to the burial ground for earth burial.

Parting through death causes great sorrow, just as in Japan. For gravestones, they place large rough stones and carve foreign letters on them. Foreigners are not buried in their burial grounds; there are separate burial grounds exclusively for foreigners. The temple priests have full heads of hair, do not shave their beards, and wear robes with wide sleeves. There are also disciple-like followers, and during funeral ceremonies both the priests and disciples come out to read something like sutras while conducting the burial.
However, they do not bury foreigners. When Kichirojī among the castaways died of illness, the other castaways gathered to bury him themselves, but the temple showed no involvement whatsoever.
