前を覆って住んでいる。穴を掘ってその中に住んでいるということである。昔は生きた人の肉も食べ、現在でも死人の肉は食べるということで、恐ろしい様子で髑髏などを持って船の側へ泳いで来て、何か品物と交換してくれるような仕草などをし、その他男女とも大勢次々と泳いで来たが、ロシア人たちは頓着しなかった。しかし船中の水が不足してきたため、この所で水を補給するにあたっては、艀に鉄砲や武器などを用意して行き、ようやく水を汲んできた。また昼夜とも海中にいる者たちのことなので、夜中に錨を奪い取らないものでもないということで、始終空砲を撃って威嚇していた。二日ほど停泊して早々に出船し、一同大変心配した。
