善六、茂平次（次郎）、巳之助の十人が全員揃って、代官所から道のり三、四町隔たった国王の屋敷へ行ったところ、城の構えはなく、石で畳み上げられた二町四方ほどもあるように見えました。門内には番人のような者が両側に二人ずつ鉄砲を持って立っているだけで、格別な備えなどがある様子は見受けられませんでした。そこから一町ほど奥へ参ると国王と面会しました。着物は何という品かは分かりませんが、至って立派で、金銀玉で飾った衣装を着て、老母の手を取り、役人のような者三人を召し連れて出てきたので、私たちは平伏したところ、彼の国では跪く礼はないので立っているようにと通詞を通して申し聞かされたので、そのようにしました。

後から引き続いて王の夫人も同様に美しい衣装で出てこられ、召使いと思われる女五、六人が付き添って出てきました。通詞は私たち側に付き添っていたところ、国王から右の通詞を通して私たちに「皆日本へ帰りたければ、追って送り帰そう。この国に居残りたいと思う者は勝手次第である」旨を銘々へ尋ねられました。言葉は詳しく分かったので、私たち四人は何とぞ帰国したい旨を願いましたが、残り六人の者はあの国に居残りたい旨答えたところ、まず引き取るようにと申し渡されたので帰りました。この度私たちを連れて渡ってきたロシア人使節の宅へ呼ばれて参ったところ、これもまた石で畳み上げた大きな家でございました。右の通詞は先年あの国へ漂着した

Zenroku, Moheiji (Jirō), and Minosuke—all ten of us gathered together and went from the magistrate's office to the king's residence, which was about three or four chō away by road. There was no castle fortification, but it appeared to be built of stacked stone covering about two chō square. Inside the gate, there were guards on both sides, two men each holding muskets, but we did not see any particular fortifications beyond that. When we proceeded about one chō further inside, we met with the king. I do not know what kind of garment he wore, but it was extremely magnificent, made of clothing decorated with gold, silver, and jewels. He came out taking the hand of an elderly woman and accompanied by three officials. We prostrated ourselves, but we were told through an interpreter that in their country there is no custom of kneeling in respect, so we should remain standing, which we did accordingly.

Subsequently, the king's wife also came out in similarly beautiful attire, accompanied by five or six women who appeared to be servants. The interpreter remained by our side, and through this interpreter, the king asked each of us individually: "If you all wish to return to Japan, I will send you back in due course. Those who wish to remain in this country may do so as they please." Since we understood the words clearly, we four requested that we somehow be allowed to return to our country, but the remaining six answered that they wished to remain in that country. We were then told to withdraw for now, so we returned. We were then summoned to the residence of the Russian envoy who had brought us to this country.
